About Punakha

Steeped in royal history and spiritual legacy, Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and remains the winter residence of the country's central monastic body. Situated at a relatively low altitude of approximately 1,200 meters, the valley boasts a warmer, subtropical microclimate that contrasts beautifully with the snow-dusted northern ranges of the Himalayas.
